Your security

Your rights as an au pair in Germany.

Time

Maximum 30 hours per week

Plus enough free time and at least one day off per week.

280 euros pocket money

  • Wash, iron and put away the children’s laundry

  • Tidy up shared rooms
  • If necessary: take care of pets
  • Empty trash bins (yellow bag, paper, residual waste)
  • Keep/clean your own room and toilet
Tip

How to keep things relaxed

Always agree on tasks in advance and contact us early if something is unclear – then it can be solved easily.

Remember: Au pair = childcare + light tasks related to the children.

Working hours of an au pair

  • At least 1.5 consecutive days off, once a month falling on a weekend
  • 4 free evenings (unless otherwise agreed in advance) must be free
  • Max. 6 hours per day with max. 30 hours per week
  • 4 weeks of paid vacation for a stay of 12 months (2 working days per month)
  • Public holidays are free or are compensated with time off (vacation)
Host family

What do my host parents pay for me?

  • Food and drinks (approx. 200 euros/month = 2400 euros/year)
  • Language course (max. 70 euros/month = max. 840 €/year)
  • Ticket to the nearest language course (if online course, no ticket has to be paid) costs vary
  • Insurance (approx. 38–50 euros/month = approx. 500–600 euros per year)
  • Pocket money (280 euros/month = 3360 euros/year)
  • Extension of the VISA (100 euros one-time)
  • Electricity, water, waste, heating (approx. 100 euros/month = 1000 euros/year)

What do host parents not have to pay for?

  • Sweets / chips / etc.
  • Clothing and shoes
  • Cosmetics
  • Hygiene items (e.g. toothpaste)
  • SIM card
  • Extra food (e.g. halal products)

NO – no mini job allowed

Your work permit is only valid for the family you live with. It is not permitted, for example, to clean for neighbors, work in the family’s business or work for external employers. This also applies to “mini jobs”.

Your contact with our families

Rules in dealing with us and the host families

VideoCall

A VideoCall with the host families is mandatory. Do not give your acceptance to the first family, but to a suitable family.

Stay in touch - but not for too long

If a host family is of interest to you, feel free to stay in contact with them. If you have matched with a family, then break contact with all other families. Do not give any data of the families to other people (strict data protection law in Germany!).

Do not ask for money

You have to pay the ticket for the flight and the embassy appointment by yourself. It is forbidden to ask our host families for it.

Communication with us

Let us know if something has changed with you, e.g. that you are no longer available, you would like to arrive later, or if you would like to have more information about the host families.
